Around the world people have locked their hair in rebellion(against colonial systems): Rastas, Rasta-Buddhists, Maori Warriors, Sadhus, Massai all had and still have. Today dreads, plaits,Afro are the modern rebellions that leaves those wit natural hair with the essence of individuality, and an "organic explosion of hair". This movement has liberated some but we still find today those who are victims of media and marketing strategies that don't promote fuzz and coil but instead straightened and shiny hair. Popular culture endorses weaves and extensions and has impacted African women's view on Beauty in a very disturbing way. I noticed this about 2 months ago when I attended my friends graduation ceremony at UKzn where out of the approximately 300 ladies who were graduating I kid u not about 290 had a weave!! This is how African women now consider themselves beautiful, unnatural hair is regarded better than our own natural coils! It's a concern and it is encouraging to see beautiful women rocking their all natural, and their rebellion is admirable.
